I was hooked on the Dodge Challenger from the time they came out and it only got worse in High School. Probably the only thing better than ogling the girls in their gym shorts was, on the way out to the football field, ogling the 71 Challenger R/T the girls gym teacher owned.
The Dodge Challenger versus the Plymouth Barracuda.
The Barracuda predated the Challenger which was only available from 70 to 74 but the hotter body style for the Cuda came in 70 along with the Challenger where they shared the same "Pony Car" frame. Both pretty much left the Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang in the dust both in style and performance. The Challenger had a little bit "sexier" body with a pronounced rear fender curve
(you have to love the curves) and I think sharper front and rear styling though it seemed like the Cuda always had more following. The 70 Challenger had a more open grill, separators were added in 71, and the catfish look grill was from 72 to 74. There were three hood styles that I know of, the six pack T/A , the Shaker Hood, and the standard "Rally Hood" with two angled scoops. Performance engine choices from the 340, 383, 440 and the 426 Hemi with a few different carburetor choices. The Challenger and Cuda are often confused in fact the green Challenger below was actually labeled in the pictures as a Cuda.
And alas we can't forget the infamous pistol grip shifter.
Great cars from a by gone era.
